End of Support for macOS 10.15 Catalina

Overview

macOS Catalina will no longer be supported on University managed Macs as of April 31, 2023. If your University Mac is currently running Catalina, we encourage you to upgrade your Mac to a newer OS.

Details / Instructions

Major software products and vendors that the University relies on, including Apple, Microsoft, and CrowdStrike, are no longer supporting or providing updates for any of their products on macOS Catalina. Due to these changes as well as security and bug considerations, it is important for you to update your Mac to a currently supported operating system. To update your Mac, follow the directions below.

  1. Backup your data, especially any critical work related files.
  2. Close down all programs.
  3. Launch the Self Service app from your Applications folder and login with your University NetID and password.
  4. Search for and launch one of the below upgrade options:
    • macOS Big Sur was released in November 2020 and consisted of a visual overhaul of macOS. Support for Big Sur is expected to last until the end of 2023.
    • macOS Monterey was released in October 2021 and added new features and improvements to apps like FaceTime, Messages and Safari. Support is expected to last until the end of 2024.
    • macOS Ventura was released in October of 2022 and added several new features like Continuity Camera, Freeform, Passkeys and Stage Manager. Support is expected to last until the end of 2025.
  5. Alternatively, you can download and install macOS Ventura from Software Update in System Preferences.
  6. Allow the applicable installer to download and install on your Mac. The upgrade may take 45-60 minutes to complete.
  7. After the upgrade is complete, you may need to update some of the installed apps on your Mac, like Microsoft Office, to their latest versions.
