Overview
Respondus LockDown Browser® is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within Blackboard. When students use LockDown Browser to access an assessment, they are unable to print, copy, go to another URL, or access other applications. Students are locked into an assessment until it is submitted for grading. Tests created for use with LockDown Browser cannot be accessed with standard browsers.
This knowledge article details the difference between the lockdown browser compared to normal web browsers and explains the steps required for Students to utilize the Lockdown Browser within Blackboard when it is required.
Instructors are requested to provide installation & configuration instructions to students.

How does Respondus Lockdown Browser differ from normal web browsers?
Respondus LockDown Browser works much like a standard browser, but some options have been removed or work differently. The list below highlights some of the key differences that will be most noticeable.
- Modified Toolbar - the condensed toolbar includes only Forward, Back, Refresh, and Stop functions.
- Assessment Mode - assessments are shown fullscreen and cannot be minimized, resized, or exited until submitted for grading.
- Disabled Controls - all printing, keystroke combinations, screen grab, function keys, and rightclick menus have been disabled.
- Links - links to other web servers do not compromise the secure testing environment.
- Blocked Features and Applications - the Start button (Windows), system tray, and menu bars have been removed. Hundreds of screen capture, messaging, screen-sharing and network monitoring applications are blocked.
How to Install Respondus Lockdown Browser:
1) Request installation / configuration directions from your instructor ( instructions are located in Blackboard -> Course Tools -> Respondus Lockdown Browser -> Getting Started). Additional instructions for instructors are available here (opens in new window).
2) After Installation open Lockdown Browser on your computer, login to Blackboard (https://blackboard.richmond.edu) and navigate to the exam and complete the exam as required by your instructor.
- PC: Locate the “LockDown Browser” shortcut on the desktop and double-click it.
- Mac: Launch “LockDown Browser” from the Applications folder.
3) If prompted to close a blocked program (e.g. screen capture, instant messaging) choose Yes.
4) If the instructor requires a test password, a new window will appear asking for the Exam Password. Enter the password and click Begin Exam.
- Note: If the instructor settings permit a student to close the browser during an exam for emergency purposes, the student will be prompted to enter a reason for exiting. The reason is displayed to the instructor in the LockDown Browser Dashboard.
