Overview

macOS Sonoma, Apple's twentieth major release of macOS, was released September 26, 2023. macOS Sonoma includes enhancements to video conferencing, Safari, Messages, Mail and more. For a detailed list of changes, visit https://support.apple.com/en-us/109035.

Support Status

Support for macOS Sonoma is currently ending on all Macs. Support will last until the end of 2026.

Installation

macOS is installed on all Classroom and Lab Mac computers on campus as part of the Standard Classroom and Computer Lab Software. macOS is also installed as part of the University's Standard Software on all Faculty and Staff Mac computers.

As support for macOS Sonoma is ending at the end of 2026, we instead recommend upgrading to macOS Sequoia or later.

We suggest caution when upgrading to a new OS. Prior to upgrading, we recommend that you have a backup that you can restore your computer to if the upgrade fails. In addition, you should allow at least 45-60 minutes for the upgrade to complete, and do not restart the computer while the upgrade is installing, even if it appears to be frozen.
