Overview

To protect University mailboxes from malicious email, such as phishing and virus attacks, as well as to reduce the influx of unsolicited commercial email messages, all incoming email sent to "@richmond.edu" addresses is filtered by Proofpoint Email Protection, a highly available cloud based anti-spam and anti-malware email filtering service. 

Messages that are found to be suspect are not delivered to the recipient mailbox, but instead are held temporarily in a Quarantine.

Details / Instructions

The Quarantine is a location where email messages that are suspected to be spam, or messages that contain malware, are stored temporarily so that they can be reviewed and retrieved, if necessary. You can review and take action on your own quarantined email through the use of the End User Digest. Messages that are not released from the Quarantine are automatically deleted after 14 calendar days.

If email messages addressed to you were stored in the Quarantine, you will receive a regularly scheduled email notification, called an End User Digest (or Digest), in your inbox. The Digest provides you with a list of the messages addressed to you that are stored in the Quarantine. You can look at the message subject headers to determine their content and decide what actions you want to apply to those messages.

The email Digest contains a number of links to the Web Application that allow you to take various actions on the messages in the Quarantine. The Web Application can be launched from the Manage My Account link in the email Digest, or by pointing a web browser to: https://003ab501.pphosted.com:10020

You can complete the following tasks from the email Digest or Web Application:

  • View and release messages from the Quarantine. Once they are released they will be delivered to your inbox.
  • Release a message from the Quarantine and add the sender to your personal Safe Senders list.
  • Release a message and report that it is not spam. Future messages that resemble the message will not be classified as spam.
  • Create lists of Safe Senders (you want email from these senders) and Blocked Senders (you do not want email from these senders).
  • Request a new Digest.
  • Request and modify your personal lists of Safe and Blocked senders.
