Overview
This document will outline the dates of activities related to the system upgrade and specific information that you will need to know.
What is being upgraded and why?
We are upgrading the phone and voicemail systems to new hardware and software as a normal maintenance procedure. The existing equipment is approaching 6 years old and nearing the end of its reliable life-span.
What are the important dates of the upgrade?
- April 12 - We will move all extensions over to the new voicemail system. The new system will be active after 6:30pm
- Access to the old voicemail system will available through April 19 by dialing extension 6000 or (804) 287-6000 from off-campus
- April 19 - All phones on campus will be connected to the upgraded phone system
- Phones will be moved in groups to the new system. Rolling outages will begin at 9pm and should be complete by 11pm.
- The old voicemail system will be unavailable following this final upgrade step.
What is happening with voicemail?
Voicemail is being upgraded to a newer platform that will more easily allow us to offer new features. The new system will require you to set a new password and record a new greeting the first time you log in. This KB Article Setting up your Voicemail - Avaya Messaging will help you with the steps for setting up your new voicemail box.
What happens if I don't setup my voicemail box?
Nothing. The new voicemail system will still answer your calls; however, the caller will hear the system default greeting for your voicemail box instead of a personal greeting.
Will 8999 (or 804-289-8999) still work?
Yes. We will continue to use 8999 to access voicemail.
Will I be able to access messages on the old system after the new system is active?
Yes. The old voicemail system will remain accessible through April 19, when we switch over to the upgraded phone system. After April 19, you will not be able to access the old voicemail system and your messages will be deleted. You can use ext. 6000 (804-287-6000 from off-campus) to access your old voicemail box from April 12 through April 19.
