Overview
Have you ever needed to connect your laptop to the Internet, but didn't have a WiFi connection available? With a "Hotspot" enabled data plan on your mobile device, you can use it as a mobile WiFi "Hotspot" for other devices.
This article will explain how to use that feature on your Apple iOS device.
If you are unsure if your data plan has this feature, check with your service provider, or you may be able to tell by looking at your plan on-line. If you have a University issued mobile device, the Telecom Office can help you with this.
Details / Instructions
The hotspot features on your device are in the Settings App
In Settings, you should see Cellular near the top, tap this to go to the Cellular settings screen. If you also see Personal Hotspot on the main settings screen, it usually means that your data plan is already setup for the Hotspot option - skip to next section.
On the Cellular settings screen, you see Personal Hotspot. Tap this to select the Personal Hostpot settings screen
In you only see the text 'Set up Personal Hotspot', this usually means that you will need to contact your service provider to have this feature enabled on your data plan.
On the Personal Hotspot settings screen, turn the Hotspot on using the slider next to Allow others to Join. The password you will use to connect to the hotspot will also be shown
Once turned on, additional information will be shown: the name of your Hotspot (uses the name of your iPhone) and additional instructions for using Bluetooth or a USB cable, if your device is capable of supporting these methods. You can tap the password to change it, if needed.
To turn off the Hotspot: simply use the slider next to Allow others to Join to turn it off.
The Hotspot will remain active as long as a device is attached, and is using the internet connection. If you disconnect from the Hotspot, it will usually turn itself off after a few minutes, to conserve battery life.
