How to Connect to the VPN using Duo

Overview

Duo is required for users to be able to connect to the University's VPN. If you have not already done so, please enroll with Duo and install the VPN on your computer or smart device. The instructions below will walk you through how to connect to the VPN using the 4 different methods that are available with Duo. 

Duo App Push (Most Common): The Duo App push will send you a notification from the Duo app on your smartphone or tablet.

Duo App Code: Duo can be validated using a code from the Duo app on your smartphone or tablet. This is useful if you don't have cellular or wifi service available on your phone or tablet. 

Duo ByPass Code: This should only be used if your normal methods for using duo are unavailable. The ByPass code would be provided to you by contacting the Help Desk at 804-287-6400. 

Duo Hardware Token: Hardware Tokens are an option that can be used for two-factor authentication if you don't have a smartphone or tablet that the Duo App can be installed on.

Details / Instructions

Connect to VPN with Duo App Push
  1. Launch the Cisco Anyconnect VPN Client and connect to cipher.richmond.edu.
  2. Enter your NetID and network password in the appropriate fields and click Login
  3. When prompted that 'Authentication with Duo is required', click on Send me a Push
  4. The screen will change to reflect that a push to your device is pending. 
  5. You will receive a prompt on your phone to approve or deny the request. This will look different depending on whether your phone is locked or not at the time the request is received. 
  6. If you don't receive notifications for Duo, launch the Duo app and tap on the banner at the top that alerts that there is a Request Waiting. 
  7. After approving the request, the VPN client on your computer will prompt you with a login banner. Click Accept and you will be logged in to the VPN.
Connect to VPN with Duo App Code
  1. Launch the Cisco Anyconnect VPN Client and connect to cipher.richmond.edu.
  2. Enter your NetID and network password in the appropriate fields. 
  3. When prompted that 'Authentication with Duo is required', click on Enter a Passcode
  4. Launch the Duo App on your phone or tablet and tap on the 'University of Richmond' item until it displays a 6 digit code. Enter the code in the field, as shown below, and then click Log In
  5. The VPN client on your computer will prompt you with a policies banner. Click Accept and you will be logged in to the VPN.
Connect to the VPN with a Duo Bypass Code

A Duo bypass code can only be generated for you if you have already enrolled with Duo using a smart phone/tablet or hardware token. Bypass codes should be used when your other methods of using Duo (app or hardware token) are unavailable to use. 

NOTE: The bypass code that is generated for you will be valid for 8 hours. 

  1. Contact the Help Desk during normal business hours to generate a bypass code for you. 
  2. Launch the Cisco Anyconnect VPN Client and connect to cipher.richmond.edu.
  3. Enter your NetID and network password in the appropriate fields and then click Login
  4. When prompted that 'Authentication with Duo is required', click on Enter a Passcode.  
  5. Enter the code that was given to you by the Help Desk in the field, as shown below, and then click Log In.  
  6. After approving the request, the VPN client on your computer will prompt you with a login banner. Click Accept and you will be logged in to the VPN.

 

Connect to the VPN with a Duo Hardware Token
  1. Launch the Cisco Anyconnect VPN Client and connect to cipher.richmond.edu.
  2. Enter your NetID and network password in the appropriate fields. 
  3. When prompted that 'Authentication with Duo is required', click on Enter a Passcode.  
  4. Push the button on your hardware token to generate a new code. Enter the code in the field, as shown below, and then click Log In.  
  5. After approving the request, the VPN client on your computer will prompt you with a login banner. Click Accept and you will be logged in to the VPN.
