Body

Overview

FTP (file transfer protocol) is a technique for moving large numbers of files and/or folders to and from computers and servers. It is effective for large amounts of material, but as Box.com suggests, it it not recommended as the primary means of accessing your UR Box content. FTP requires an FTP client app of your choosing (Filezilla and Cyberduck are popular free tools).

Details / Instructions

The instructions vary across FTP apps, but below are the general settings needed by FTP apps:

  • Server: ftp.box.com
  • Username: Your Box account username is your UR email address (you must include the "@richmond.edu" part)
  • PasswordYour Box external password
  • Port: Box supports FTP (port 21), FTPS implicit (port 990), and FTPES explicit (port 21). For University business, you must use FTPS or FTPES as that will encrypt the communications to reduce the chances of data theft.
  • Please note that Box supports Passive FTP but not Active FTP.

Notes and Troubleshooting

  • Please read this article about preserving the original created/modified times.
  • Resuming an upload/download: The commands, REST (restart) and APPE (append) are not supported. This means that Box does not support resumable uploads/downloads on Box for FTP. Any failed upload or download needs to be retried; however, FileZilla and CyberDuck automatically retry for you.
  • Error Message: 530 Box: CAPTCHA is required. If you see this error, you have triggered Captcha on your account. To clear the Captcha, login with your web browser and Box credentials (University email address and passphrase).

The "Box external password" is a different password from your UR NetID's passphrase and will allow "external access" to your Box account for third-party apps, such as FTP.
