Installation Instructions

Instructions for how to install and authorize ArcGIS Desktop for a single use license. This installation process will install the following components:

  • ArcGIS Catalog
  • ArcGIS Administrator
  • ArcGlobe
  • ArcMap
  • ArcScene


  1. Review the ArcGIS Desktop system requirements to verify hardware and software requirements.
  2. Download to your desktop.
  3. When the download is complete right click and select Extract All.
  4. Once extraction is complete, a new window will open with two files. One file is the installer and the other file is used to authorize the installation.
  5. Double click ArcGIS_Desktop_10.8_Student.exe to begin installation.
  6. At the Destination Folder for Files window click Next.
  7. Verify Launch the setup program is checked. Click Close. If prompted, click Yes.
  8. Click Next at the Welcome Screen.
  9. Review the license agreement. Click I accept the master agreement, then click Next to continue.
  10. Leave the installation Type window with Complete selected, then click Next.
  11. Click Next to accept the default location.
  12. Click Next to accept the Python Destination Folder.
  13. Click Install to begin the installation.
  14. When the installation completes, click Finish. The ArcGIS Administrator Wizard should open automatically. Click Cancel to close it. Continue to the next section to authorize your installation.


  1. Return to the folder that contains 2 files from step 4. 
  2. Click EducationSiteArcGISDesktop_SingleUse.prv to begin activation.
  3. In the Software Authorization Wizard window, click the option, “I have received an authorization file and am now ready to finish the authorization process.”  Check to make sure the license file location is pre-populated.

  1. Click Next.
  2. Click Authorize with Esri now using the Internet, then click Next.
  3. Complete the Authorization Information form, then click Next. During the activation process, you will be prompted to type your first and last name, email, and phone number. These are required fields and you cannot continue the process unless these fields are complete.

  1. Complete the Authorization Information form (continued), then click Next.

  1. With the software authorization number pre-populated, click Next.
  2. At the Authorize Software Extensions window, leave options as-is and click Next.
  3. At the Evaluate Software Extensions window, leave as-is and click Next.
  4. You will see “Authorizing Software” progress bar, then “Congratulations, your software has been authorized and is now ready for use.
